AI PCB Design Tools in 2026: An Honest Comparison

Updated 2026-10-09 · BuildPCB
Disclosure: we make BuildPCB, one of the tools below. We've tried to describe every tool fairly, using each company's own public descriptions as of October 2026. Products change quickly — check each vendor's site for current features and prices.

“AI PCB design” covers very different products. Some take a sentence and hand you factory files; some lay out a board from a schematic an engineer already drew; some are a chatbot inside a CAD editor. The right one depends mostly on what you bring (an idea, a schematic, code) and what you want back (advice, a layout, a board you can order).

The three kinds of AI PCB tools

1. End-to-end: from an idea to factory files

You describe what the board should do and the software makes every decision: parts, circuit, layout, checks and export. This is the only category that doesn't require you to know PCB design. BuildPCB works this way: you type something like “a mini drone with an ESP32”, the AI picks parts that are really in stock, draws the schematic, places and routes the board, runs ERC and DRC, and delivers Gerbers, drill files, a bill of materials and a pick-and-place file. It runs in the browser on a phone, tablet or computer. See how to make a PCB with AI, step by step.

Limits: like any AI design, the result should be reviewed before ordering, and high-speed, RF, mains-powered or certified products still need an engineer.

2. AI layout and design for engineers

These tools assume an engineer is driving. Quilter focuses on layout: you bring a schematic and constraints, and it explores many placement and routing candidates using reinforcement learning and physics simulation. JITX lets engineers express a design as code and specifications and generates the board from them. Diode Computers combines AI and code-first tooling with human review and manufacturing. DeepPCB applies AI to routing. They can save experienced teams a lot of time, but they are not built for someone who has never designed a board.

3. AI assistants inside CAD, and chatbots

Flux is a browser-based PCB editor with an AI copilot that can explain, suggest parts and, with its agent features, carry out parts of the design. KiCad users can connect AI assistants through open-source MCP servers. General chatbots like ChatGPT and Claude are excellent tutors and reviewers but, on their own, don't produce files a factory can build.

How to choose

What to check in any AI PCB tool

  1. Real parts: does it choose components that are actually in stock, with manufacturer part numbers?
  2. Verification: does it run ERC and DRC, and show you the results — not just a nice 3D render?
  3. Standard output: can you download Gerbers, drill files, BOM and pick-and-place, and use any manufacturer?
  4. Editing: can you change the design afterwards, by hand or by asking?
  5. Honesty about limits: good tools tell you when a design needs an engineer.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best AI PCB design tool for beginners?

If you have no PCB experience and want a finished board you can order, choose an end-to-end tool that starts from a plain-language description and delivers factory files, such as BuildPCB. If you are learning PCB design, a CAD tool with an AI assistant teaches you more along the way.

Can ChatGPT or Claude design a PCB?

On their own, general chatbots can explain circuits, suggest parts and review a design, but they don't produce manufacturable files: they can't check live part stock, run DRC or export Gerbers. They become PCB tools when connected to design software — for example through KiCad MCP servers — or inside products built for it, like BuildPCB.

Is there a free AI PCB design tool?

KiCad is free and open source, and community MCP servers let AI assistants drive it, but setting that up needs technical skills. BuildPCB lets you create an account and explore a demo project for free; designing your own boards needs a monthly plan. Check each vendor's site for current pricing.

Which AI tool is best for professional engineering teams?

Teams with complex boards usually look at tools that work from their own schematics and constraints — such as Quilter for AI layout, JITX for code-driven design, or Flux for collaborative browser CAD with an AI copilot — and keep an engineer reviewing every design.

Can an AI-designed PCB be manufactured?

Yes, if the tool exports standard manufacturing files (Gerbers, drill files, bill of materials and pick-and-place) and the design passes ERC and DRC. Always review the design before ordering, especially for mains-powered, RF or safety-critical products.
